The first man-made plastic was created by
Alexander Parkes who publicly demonstrated it at the 1862 Great International
Exhibition in London . The material
called Parkesine was an organic material derived from cellulose that once
heated could be molded, and retained its shape when cooled.
Parkes also invented a process for removing
silver from lead by extraction with molten zinc. Parkes was born in Birmingham ,
England.He also worked on rubber.
In 1855 Parkes patented the first plastic. By
dissolving cellulose nitrate inalcohol and camphor containing ether, he
produced a hard solid which could be molded when heated, which he called
Parkesine.
